Unbelievable Luxury Awaits: Felda Residence Tanjung Leman, Mersing!
Unbelievable Luxury Awaits: …Maybe? A Messy, Honest Review of Felda Residence Tanjung Leman (Mersing)
Alright, buckle up, buttercups, because I'm about to spill the (slightly lukewarm) tea on Felda Residence Tanjung Leman. They call it “Unbelievable Luxury” and, well…let’s just say my expectations were sky-high and my actual experience was more like a slightly bumpy plane ride with glimpses of the promised land.
First, the Essentials: Accessibility, Cleanliness, Safety…and the Dreaded Wi-Fi!
Okay, so, important stuff first. Accessibility: They say they have facilities for disabled guests. That's a good start, but I didn't specifically test them, so I can't personally vouch for how well they cater. More deets on this from someone who actually needs them, maybe?
Cleanliness & Safety: Here's where things got interesting, especially in our post-pandemic world. They really seemed to be trying. Anti-viral cleaning products, tick. Daily disinfection in common areas, tick. Hand sanitizer stations everywhere? Double tick! They even had room sanitization opt-out available, which I thought was a nice touch. The staff was, like, painstaking about wearing masks and were definitely trained in safety protocol. Felt safe, even if I did end up questioning the effectiveness of the "professional-grade sanitizing services". More on that later…
Internet Access…Oh, the Internet! The bane of the modern traveler. They boast Free Wi-Fi in all rooms! and Wi-Fi in public areas! and even Internet [LAN]. Sounds amazing, right? WRONG. I spent half my trip battling the Wi-Fi demons. It was spotty at best, and downright abysmal at worst. I was constantly fighting for a signal. Forget streaming movies; I could barely send an email. This, my friends, is a serious issue in our digital age. They really need to get a grip on this. The frustration…it's still simmering, days later. I even tried the LAN connection. Useless!
Rooms: The Decent, the Disappointing, and the “Oh, Is That a Stain?”
Okay, let’s talk about the actual rooms. Mine had…the Additional toilet. Score! A Bathtub? Yes, and in my imagination it was filled with bubble bath and rainbows. Not quite how it played out in reality, however. There was a Blackout curtains, which was essential for sleeping in and ignoring my responsibilities! I mean, the Bathrobes were fluffy, and the Slippers, well, I wore them everywhere. The Air conditioning blasted like a polar vortex. The Desk and Laptop workspace were appreciated, though my internet connection rendered them somewhat useless. The In-room safe box was a nice touch, but my prized possession (a questionable souvenir I'd picked up from Penang) was still in my bag.
The biggest letdown? The "luxury" kind of felt…faded. I'm not a snob, but a few stains here and there, some slightly worn furniture and oh boy the bedsheets… it was a bit of a meh feeling. My Seating area felt a little…unloved. And I think I saw a suspicious mark on the carpet. The Internet access – wireless was, as mentioned, a joke. But the window that opens was appreciated, even if it did face a car park.
Food, Glorious Food…Mostly Good, Occasionally Questionable.
Okay, the food. This is where Felda Residence showed some promise. They had a Restaurant (duh!), and a Coffee shop. The Breakfast [buffet] was pretty decent. They had all the usual suspects: Asian breakfast, Western breakfast, eggs cooked to order. The Buffet in restaurant was HUGE, I gotta say. The Desserts in restaurant were tempting. I indulged a little too much. And the Coffee/tea in restaurant was…well, it was available. Not award-winning, but it did the job.
They also had a Poolside bar. I imagined myself sipping a cocktail by the pool, like a sophisticated travel blogger. What I actually did was order a lukewarm soft drink, and then got covered in sunscreen. The Snack bar was a savior when that mid-afternoon hunger pang hit. I loved the Salad in restaurant. Okay, I'm getting sidetracked.
One night, I tried the Asian cuisine in restaurant. Delicious! The Western cuisine in restaurant, also not bad. The A la carte in restaurant options were, I think, a step up from the buffet, and well, you could also opt for Room service [24-hour] if you're feeling antisocial. Sadly, the soup in restaurant was nothing to write home about and I wasn't a fan of the Bottle of water, it tasted like…the water. Maybe it was just me.
Things to Do: Relaxation…Eventually?
Ways to Relax: They really did try to entice you into a zen state. There’s a Pool with view; that's where I spent most of my time trying to forget about the internet. A Sauna and Steamroom beckoned. But frankly, the internet frustrations kinda killed the mood for me.
Massage: I considered it. But the thought of having to then go back to my wifi-less room…I just couldn’t.
Fitness center: I thought about it. But my post-buffet food coma, and the lack of internet, quickly put an end to those plans.
I did manage to get in a bit of Swimming pool [outdoor] time. The pool was pretty!
Other Amenities - The Good, the Bad, and the Unnecessary
They had Business facilities, including Meetings. I tried to arrange a meeting but, you guessed it, the Wi-Fi for special events was dodgy. And you need a decent connection for Audio-visual equipment for special events. They have a Gift/souvenir shop. I got a t-shirt.
On a good note, they do offer Car park [free of charge] and Car park [on-site]. They even had a Car power charging station for the eco-warriors! I was too lazy to check it out.
The Downsides (and The One Big Thing That Really Bugged Me)
Look, I'm not a hotel snob. But here's where Felda Residence faltered for me.
The Wi-Fi. Oh, the Wi-Fi. It was a constant source of frustration. It genuinely diminished the experience.
The Verdict: Kinda Okay, Could Be Better…Especially the Internet!
Felda Residence Tanjung Leman has potential. The location is nice. The staff is generally friendly. The food is decent. But the issues with the Internet are, frankly, a dealbreaker. Honestly, the biggest problem was that the "unbelievable luxury" was…well, it was a bit believable. Not totally mind-blowing.

Okay, buckle up buttercups, because this isn't your average, pristine travel itinerary. This is me, in all my messy, indecisive glory, trying to survive a few days at Hotel Felda Residence Tanjung Leman in Mersing, Malaysia. Prepare for chaos.
The "Actually Going to Try and Plan This…ish" Schedule
Day 1: Arrival, Beach Bliss (and Bitter Disappointment)
- 9:00 AM: Wake up in a cold sweat, realizing I haven't even looked at my packing list. Cue frantic scrambling. This is already going swimmingly.
- 10:00 AM: Actually IN the car! (Miracle!) The drive to Mersing… well, it's Malaysia. So, expect traffic jams, construction, and the occasional rogue durian vendor on the side of the road.
- 1:00 PM: Arrive at Hotel Felda. It’s… fine. Reception is slow, the air conditioning is fighting a losing battle against the humidity, and my room key immediately gets demagnetized. Sigh. I’m sure this stay will be perfect.
- 2:00 PM: FOOD! The hotel restaurant. Expectation: Delicious. Reality: Slightly bland. Still, a plate of nasi lemak saves my sanity. The coffee? Undrinkable, a crime against the very concept of morning.
- 3:00 PM: The beach. OOOOOH, the BEACH. It's gorgeous. Pristine sand, turquoise water, palm trees swaying in the breeze… I practically sprint towards the ocean. This is where the real magic happens, right? RIGHT?!
- 3:30 PM: A colossal miscalculation. A swarm of sandflies. I'm talking biblical plagues. My ankles? Destroyed. My attempts to enjoy the sun become a frantic dance, swatting and cursing. I'm forced to retreat. The beach is now my enemy! (Which… is probably dramatic. Okay, maybe just a "minor nemesis.")
- 4:00 PM: Back to the room. Apply copious amounts of insect repellent, and self-pity.
- 7:00 PM: Dinner at the hotel. This time, I'm going for the grilled fish. Praying it's better than the coffee.
- 8:00 PM - Bedtime: Honestly, after the sandfly debacle, I'm just going to hide in my room with a book and try to forget the world exists. This trip is already challenging my expectations.
Day 2: Island Hopping, Sunburn, and Possibly Vomiting
- 7:00 AM: Wake up! I think that this time, a real meal is a must. I may need strength, I may need more coffee.
- 8:00 AM: Breakfast! I try the nasi lemak. Maybe it's better than yesterday?
- 8:30 AM: The real adventure kicks off: Island hopping! I think I may die from this.
- 9:30 AM: We arrive at the first island (so beautiful), the boat almost capsized. I spent the entire journey clenching everything. The water… so clear. The snorkelling… AMAZING. The feeling of "sea-sick"… horrible!
- 12:00 PM: More islands, more snorkelling. I’m starting to get a little sunburnt on my nose. I spend the next 30 minutes, taking pictures.
- 2:00 PM: Fresh seafood lunch. The fish is tasty. I’m getting used to this.
- 4:00 PM: Another beach. It is beautiful.
- 5:00 PM: Back to the hotel, collapse onto the bed. My nose is looking like Rudolph. Maybe it is time to visit the doctor.
- 7:00 PM: Dinner. I'm too tired to even eat. So, I skip it.
- 8:00 PM - Bedtime: I finally remember the insect repellent I had.
Day 3: Lazy Day, Last Ditch Attempts at Fun (and Possibly Redemption)
- 9:00 AM: Finally, decide to head to the pool. Enjoy the sun, and try not to get burnt again.
- 12:00 PM: Grab lunch.
- 1:00 PM: Finally, it is time to leave this hotel. The holiday is over.
- 2:00 PM - Car Home: The drive back. I'm sunburnt, insect-bitten, slightly sea-sick, and utterly exhausted. This trip was a rollercoaster.
- 6:00 PM - Arrive Home: After all of that, I have arrived home.
Quirks, Rambles, and Random Thoughts:
- The Hotel Staff: They're… trying. Bless their hearts. The language barrier is real.
- The Weather: Humid, hot, and occasionally threatening to rain. Embrace it. Or at least, tolerate it.
- My Emotional State: A rollercoaster. Thrilled by the beauty, annoyed by the sandflies, and constantly balancing between "living my best life" and "is it time to go home now?"
- The Food: Hit or miss. But hey, it's Malaysia, so even the misses are still pretty good!
- The Beach: I still have a love-hate relationship with it, but it is still very beautiful.
- Overdoing It: I need to learn to pace myself!!!!
So, there you have it. My ridiculously honest attempt at a travel itinerary for Hotel Felda Residence Tanjung Leman. Remember, this is just a suggestion. Feel free to adjust, adapt, and embrace the chaos. And for the love of all that is holy, pack the insect repellent. You have been warned.
