IHG's Birmingham Gem: Fultondale's BEST Holiday Inn Express!
Fultondale's Finest (and Seriously, Pretty Good): A Deep Dive into the Holiday Inn Express Birmingham-Fultondale
Okay, let's be real. When you're looking for a hotel in Fultondale, Alabama, your expectations are… well, let's just say they're tempered. You're not expecting the Ritz-Carlton. You're hoping for clean, comfortable, and maybe, just maybe, a free breakfast that doesn't taste like sadness. And guess what? The Holiday Inn Express Birmingham-Fultondale largely delivers. As a self-proclaimed (and totally unqualified) hotel critic, I've stayed in my share of dives and diamonds, and this HIE? It's a solid three-and-a-half stars, leaning towards four on a good day.
Accessibility - Thumbs Up (Mostly):
Right off the bat, let's talk accessibility. This is crucial. And from what I could see, they've put in the effort. Wheelchair accessible rooms are available, which is a huge plus. Elevator? Check. I didn't personally need it, but seeing it there is reassuring. I didn't dig into every single detail, but it appeared they'd covered the basics. This is a HUGE win for a lot of travelers.
Cleanliness & Safety – A Sigh of Relief:
Before I even get to the good stuff (and there is good stuff), let's acknowledge the elephant in the room – or, more accurately, the microscopic particles that made us all paranoid for the past few years. The staff obviously takes hygiene seriously. They're using anti-viral cleaning products. There's hand sanitizer everywhere. I even saw them scrubbing down the elevator buttons – which, as a germaphobe, filled me with genuine joy! They had daily disinfection in common areas, and the whole place felt clean. The room was, you guessed it, cleaned between stays and had room sanitization opt-out available. Seeing the first aid kit and the doctor/nurse on call certainly gave that extra level of safety. They also have Staff trained in safety protocol. Whew!
Dining, Drinking, and Snacking – Breakfast Bonanza (and Beyond):
Okay, here's the truth: the Breakfast [buffet] is the highlight. It's not gourmet, but it's plentiful and actually tasty. You're talking your standard American fare: eggs (scrambled, usually), sausage, bacon, maybe some weirdly good breakfast potatoes. And the buffet in restaurant? It's pretty good! They had Asian cuisine in restaurant, which was unexpected, but a delightful surprise if you're looking for a change from the usual. The coffee shop was great, and you could even get a bottle of water if you have to leave early.
They also had a snack bar. Now, before you get too excited, it's a slightly sad version of a convenience store. But hey, it's there! They had coffee/tea in restaurant. I didn't see a bar or poolside bar, sadly. There was also a vegetarian restaurant. The a la carte in restaurant was amazing, and I was in heaven. The happy hour was great!
Internet – Bless Their Wi-Fi Souls:
Free Wi-Fi in all rooms! Thank God. And the Internet access was reliable. I even saw the Internet [LAN], but I didn’t test it. The Internet services worked well.
Things to Do, Ways to Relax – Not Exactly a Spa Day, But…:
Okay, listen, Fultondale isn't exactly known for its vibrant nightlife. This isn’t the hotel to come for your Body scrub, Body wrap, Foot bath, Sauna, Spa, or Spa/sauna needs. But, they do have a Fitness center, because sometimes all you need is a treadmill after a long day. A Gym/fitness is a must.
They have a swimming pool, which is also an outdoor one. I didn’t see a Pool with view or a steamroom.
Services and Conveniences – The Little Things That Matter:
The air conditioning in public area was a big plus. I did not experience the audio-visual equipment for special events, but I love the idea. There’s a Business facilities. There’s a Cash withdrawal, and a Concierge. They have Contactless check-in/out, which is a lifesaver. There’s a Convenience store nearby, and the Currency exchange was very clutch. They had a Daily housekeeping service, and the Doorman was very friendly.
I didn't try the dry cleaning, but it's nice that it's there! They also have an Elevator, which is great! The thing I love the most is the Facilities for disabled guests. They have Food delivery, if you're lazy like me.
The Gift/souvenir shop seems like a nice addition! The Indoor venue for special events is also a cool add. They even provide an Invoice provided. You will not miss the Ironing service. They have Laundry service, which is a great addition. The Luggage storage was very helpful, and the Meeting/banquet facilities will come in handy. They provide Meetings. They have Meeting stationery. The Outdoor venue for special events is beautiful.
For the Kids – Family-Friendly Vibes:
This hotel is family-friendly. There's a Babysitting service, which is great if you're traveling with little ones. They have Kids meal, which is nice. They also had Kids facilities.
Getting Around - Simple Pleasures
I didn’t use the Airport transfer, because I already drove there. They had Car park [free of charge]. And there were Car park [on-site], which is fantastic!

The Imperfections (Because Nothing's Perfect):
Okay, let's be honest. This isn't a luxury resort. The decor is a bit… well, it’s your standard Holiday Inn Express aesthetic. Nothing jumps out at you. The hallways could use a little extra polish. And the water pressure in the shower was a tad anemic; I definitely felt like a limp noodle at times.
Quirky Observations & Emotional Ramblings:
I was really happy about those super clean elevator buttons. It was the little things that made my stay.
Overall – Worth It? Absolutely.
For the price point, the Holiday Inn Express Birmingham-Fultondale delivers. It's clean, comfortable, safe, and offers a decent breakfast. It's a great choice for a business trip, a stopover on a road trip, or even a weekend getaway (if you're into the Fultondale vibe, which I am!). The staff was friendly and helpful. It's a solid

Operation: Birmingham Bliss… Or Bust? (A Holiday Inn Express Adventure)
Okay, people, listen up! I'm about to unleash the itinerary that, in my head, promised a perfectly curated Birmingham experience. Spoiler alert: it probably won't be perfect. Expect a healthy dose of chaos, questionable food choices, and me, wrestling with existential dread in a hotel room that's far too beige. Buckle up, buttercups! We're going in.
Day 1: Arrival and the Initial Panic of Fultondale
- 2:00 PM - Arrival at BHM (Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport): Touchdown! My flight was thankfully mostly on time. The first hurdle? Finding my rental car. Apparently, "compact SUV" translates to "Tiny, cramped thing that barely fits my luggage." Sigh. Initial anxiety levels: 6/10.
- 3:00 PM - Check-in at Holiday Inn Express & Suites Birmingham North - Fultondale: Okay, the pictures online were… optimistic. It's…clean. The lobby smells vaguely of chlorine and the promise of a continental breakfast. I swear, I saw a dude in Crocs and a wife-beater arguing with the front desk about the price of a Diet Coke. Welcome to Birmingham, I guess. Initial judgement: 5/10. Undecided.
- 3:30 PM - Room Reconnaissance: The room itself? Standard. Two queen beds that look like they've seen a few sleepless nights. The air conditioner is doing its best, which I appreciate. The view? Let's just say it's a riveting panorama of the highway. But hey, at least there's free Wi-Fi! (Praise be.)
- 4:00 PM - The Great Grocery Store Gauntlet: This is where things started to unravel. I figured, a quick trip to the local grocery store for snacks and water. Easy, right? Wrong. Navigating the aisles felt like a Survivor challenge. So. Many. Choices. And the sheer volume of sugary cereals on display? Traumatizing. I ended up with a bag of chips I didn’t want, a single organic apple (because I'm trying, okay?!), and a bottle of water that probably cost more than my soul.
- 5:00 PM - The "Relaxation" Attempt: Back in the hotel. Time for a shower and… well, an attempt at relaxation. Tried the bath salts I packed. Verdict? Meh. Ended up mostly frustrated because the water pressure was weaker than my will to exercise.
- 7:00 PM - Dinner Debacle at "The Hometown BBQ": Okay, so I googled "best BBQ near me." This place, "The Hometown BBQ," seemed promising. Pulled pork sandwich, side of coleslaw… What could go wrong? Everything. The sandwich was alright, but the coleslaw? It tasted suspiciously like mayonnaise and disappointment. And the staff seemed to be in a perpetual state of mild exasperation. Overall Experience: 2/10. (The sweet tea was decent, though.)
- 8:30 PM - Hotel Room Television Tango: Back in the room. Tried to watch something but the picture quality was terrible and the remote was just a button press gamble.
- 9:30 PM - Bedtime and Existential Thoughts: I swear, hotel beds are designed to swallow you whole. Lying here, staring at the ceiling, wondering if I should have just stayed home. Is this what middle age feels like? The crushing weight of expectations and a mediocre BBQ experience? I need a drink. And maybe a therapist.
Day 2: Culture, Caffeine, and the Pursuit of Something… Other
- 7:00 AM - The Free Breakfast Brigade: The moment of truth. The continental breakfast. The smell of stale coffee permeated the air. I grabbed a lukewarm waffle (which thankfully, I could toast), some questionable fruit, and a coffee that tasted like despair. Verdict: 3/10.
- 8:00 AM - Battling The Traffic, Part 1: The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute: The traffic getting into downtown Birmingham was… intense. But the Civil Rights Institute? Absolutely worth the struggle. Powerful, moving, and a sobering reminder of the fight for equality. I was deeply affected. This is the kind of experience that makes you grateful for the ability to be in the world like this.
- 10:00 AM - A Coffee Quest: Rooftop Coffee: Needing a caffeine boost and a dose of Birmingham’s charm. Rooftop Coffee delivered! A cute little place, with a friendly barista and great coffee. This place was a must-see.
- 11:00 AM - Exploring the City (Attempt 1): Tried driving around downtown Birmingham, getting my bearings. Got lost. Very lost. Spent 20 minutes circling a one-way street, muttering under my breath. Anxiety levels: 8/10. Decided it was time for plan B.
- 12:00 PM – A Culinary Curiosity: Lunch at "Saw's BBQ" (Again): I saw Saw's BBQ was nearby and decided to go back there
- I decided to take a risk and try a new dish.
- The fried okra here was a hit! I'm a fan of it. My only complaint is the price.
Day 3: Escape and the Epilogue of the Beige Hotel
- 7:00 AM - The Last Breakfast (and a Vague Sense of Accomplishment): One last breakfast. Managed to snag a decent bagel. Victory! Actually started to feel a bit sentimental packing up. It had all been an experience.
- 8:00 AM - The Final Road Warriors The drive to the airport was smooth. Saying goodbye to my rental car.
- 10:00 AM - Back to Reality: Back at home. Unpacking. Sorting through the chaos of my experience and the slightly tattered remnants of my sanity.
The Verdict?
Birmingham? Definitely worth a visit. The Civil Rights Institute was life-changing. The coffee was amazing. The BBQ? Hit or miss. The Hotel? Well, it was a clean, functional, beige box that served its purpose. Would I go back to Birmingham? Absolutely! Would I stay at the same hotel? Probably not. But hey, the adventure was real. And truthfully, that's what matters, right?
Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I need another coffee… and maybe a nap. The aftermath of a trip, especially one of this magnitude, is exhausting. Cheers!
